Yes, Washington is Broken. Off The Fiscal Cliff We Go.

republican-leaders-congress-dwarfsOnce again, Washington DC fulfills all our expectations and fails to get anything of any consequence done. As all the New Year’s parties begin, we can turn towards our political “leaders” and offer a collective, “What the ???!!!” to those who have again failed, entirely, to do something that’s good for the country – for the sole reason of trying to keep their own jobs.

Washington politicians send us off the fiscal cliff – to protect their own jobs? Yes: because the gerrymandered districts that republicans have drawn to guarantee that they will own many, many congressional districts for decades to come are starting to bite them in the ass. Republicans in Congress MUST act like recalcitrant children, particularly on issues of taxes, the military, and social programs (that they have demonized to get into power), so that they won’t be primaried out of the next election by someone even more right-wing-extreme than they are.

Starting tomorrow they can vote for tax reductions rather than a tax increaseseven though the final tax figure will likely be exactly the same – but they’re so scared of losing their jobs (because they are likely incapable of doing anything other than blowing hot air)…. and care so little for the long-term impact that their constant disfunction has on our economy… that they willingly push America off the fiscal cliff.

One possible positive result that might manifest from Eric Cantor and his nodding heads refusing to do anything Obama supports  over and over again: Congress pushing the U.S. “over the fiscal cliff” will mark yet another example that the Republican Party doesn’t care a damn about anyone in this country who isn’t a millionaire. It’s one more example that when piled on all the others might wake a few more people up to reality: that the Republican Party is nothing more than an enterprise designed to grow its own wealth. They could give a rat’s ass about the everyday people who have voted them into office time and time again.

All the republicans in Congress are fighting to keep their jobs – not necessarily from Democrats, but from the MORE extreme people in their own party. The result: off the fiscal cliff Congress takes America. Not for logical reasons. Not for honorable reasons, but for political reasons, to prove to their super-red-saturated districts that they designed that they are, in fact, as crazy as the rest of of the right wing. All politicians are doing by sending us off “the cliff” is protecting themselves from a getting hit from the right during the next primary season. They could give a wahoo about anything else – they simply do… not… care… about anything more than saving their own seat in Congress. Retaining the seat is paramount, what they actually do with it doesn’t matter to them, because they know that after a few full terms in Congress, they have very well paying jobs waiting for them on the outside.

It’s pathetic. Republicans AND Democrats. Democrats because apparently they, too, are so bad at their jobs that they can’t convince even the small amount of Republicans needed to get a damn thing done. Republicans, of course, are more to blame because of their impossibly rigid ideologies and inability to take a single step unless they all agree. If they don’t have a full consensus  they won’t do anything… in what world does every single person agree? What a WONDERFUL philosophy for governing… in a damn democracy – all of us or none of us… I think that’s not quite what’s intended when Congress was first conceived.

Sadly, we all basically knew that this was the plan. Republicans cannot bring themselves to think independently let alone break from the protection of the SuperPAC. Meaning? They cannot vote for a tax hike of any kind. They’re still terrified that they will get primaried  out of a job by the ill-educated constituents that they’ve created in their extreme right-wing world. They’re terrified of a guy name Grover (still, it’s amazing). And they refuse to acknowledge the MOUNTAINS of help and assistance that they actually receive from the government every single day. (That’s why I agree: let them secede. Good riddance, let them eat their own hypocrisy for awhile, then they’ll come back hungry for reality and compromise.)

Scared, gutless congressmen and women are “running” this county. It’s always been bad, and we’ve grown to accept that people who fancy themselves politicians will always be a little corrupt and a little shady, but these people are narcissistic morons. The combination of ego and flat-out dumb-ass-ness of this Congress will go down in history with its own chapter entitled, “What the Hell Was the United States of America Thinking?”

Heigh-ho, heigh-ho, it’s off the fiscal cliff we all go… thanks to a handful of greedy cowards who are too afraid to stand up and do what’s right for the whole country rather than just what the zealots in their districts demand in order to support them in the next elected.

Of course, now that all tax rates are going up… NOW the republicans can vote to lower them, and thusly keep their pledge – keep the lost mice living in their maze-like congressional districts happy with crumbs… they waited until it was easy and safe for their own hides.

Congress prefers to do what’s good for their own job without any concern whatsoever as to what long-term impact it will have on the stability of the country and economy (remember the first time Republicans brought us into this politician-made financial fiasco with the debt ceiling?).

Not one of them cares more about the country than they do for themselves. Not one of them deserves to be in Congress. There is no honor or compassion, reason or intelligence in the Republican caucus. They stand on empty republican words: principles, moral values, family values – and are willing to destroy the country, our morals, and our families because it makes them feel powerful to say no to the President. They don’t even know why they’re saying no anymore. It’s ingrained habit without reason. I truly, deeply believe that most of our “representatives” in Washington are that selfish, ignorant, and brainwashed by their own information bubble.

We’re better than this.
